Born in Alachua County, FL, Brian served in law enforcement prior to making a career in the United States Marine Corps as a SSGT. He was a member of the Second Force Reconnaissance Battalion; a qualified infantryman, Airborne, and a Radio Chief. His qualifications included HRST, hazardous material management, expert rifleman and a certified parachutist.
During his 18+ years in the Corps, Brian served in several active conflicts including Operation Rapid Cheetah/Joint Guardian, Macedonia/Kosovo, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and The Global War on Terrorism. Among the many commendations Brian earned were Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (6), Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal (Macedonia/Kosovo), Iraq Campaign Medal with 2 stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (4), Letter of Appreciation (2), Meritorious Mast and NATO Medal.
Brian was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, Hampstead Detachment #1321; always ready to help his fellow brothers and Marine family. He was also an active and caring member of the Hampstead community willing to help a neighbor, a friend or family. Anyone who knew him will remember Brian’s jokes and enthusiasm as well as his infectious grin and distinctive laugh. He loved hunting and the outdoors as well as a strong cup of black coffee.
Brian is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Crystal Lanier Mathews of the home; daughter, Tricia Mathews, of Florida; mother, Barbara Mathews of Missouri; and brother, Dean Mathews of North Carolina. At the age of 51, Brian was taken much too soon.
Family and friends are invited to Chapel By the Bay, 216 Michigan Avenue, Holly Ridge, NC on Monday, April 8 at 6 p.m. as a memorial to reminisce and celebrate his life, visitation to immediately follow. Funeral service will be held at Coastal Carolina State Veteran Cemetery, 110 Montford Landing Rd, Jacksonville, NC on Wednesday, April 10 at 12 noon.
Brian and Crystal’s church family want to honor his memory by helping to ensure that Crystal is cared for in this unexpected time. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Mathews Compassion and Support Fund at Chapel By the Bay.
